I Just Want To Dance

MUCHAS GRACIAS to everyone who came out and supported Richmond Zine Fest last night! The performers Lobo Marino, Black Girls, Long Arms, and all of our readers who bravely read in front of a crowd unfamiliar with zines–Stacey of LIPS Richmond, Elizabeth, Katerina, and last but certainly not least, Danny, have our sincerest gratitude. Thanks to Strange Matter for being so awesome and accommodating, and we’re already looking forward to planning a bigger and better collaboration between the music and zine scenes in RVA. I’m currently rifling through all the pictures of last night to share with everyone, so expect a picture post pretty soon.

Last night’s event exceeded our expectations for attendance, and we raised $537 between entry cover and table donations (the screenprinted patches and canvas bags were a hit!), so THANK YOU in every language in existence. We’re closer to the amount needed for the venue space and optimistic about not holding this year’s Zine Fest curbside in possibly rainy, windy weather (the archnemesis of finite paper goods), which brings us to our next fundraising event….

You have until September 29th to polish your dancing shoes and practice your moves for Dancezine Queen at Balliceaux. DJs Mike and Allen will premiere the BEARD dance party with ALL VINYL punk, new wave, indie, dance, and queercore music. More details will be revealed… including a special event mini-zine flyer!

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks here in Richmond, VA, and many of our organizers may be without power or with limited internet access. However, we’re still on for the Richmond Zine Fest 2011 Benefit Show with Long Arms, Black Girls, and Lobo Marino performing! We’re also very excited to have zine readings by Danny Rathbun, Elizabeth Albrecht, Alan Webb, Stacey Randolph, and Katerina Charalambidis!

We’ll also have patches, canvas bags, and zines available. Join us this Wednesday at Strange Matter (929 W. Grace Street, Richmond, VA). Doors open at 8 p.m. $5; 18+.

Speaking of events: Mark your calendars for our upcoming dance party and potluck/zine reading events

DanceZine Queen Dance Party for the RVA Zine Fest at Balliceaux. It’s the PREMIERE of DJs Mike and Allen’s BEARD dance party, which is ALL VINYL punk, new wave, indie, dance, and queercore music! Dance with us Thursday September 29th, 10:30 p.m. This event is 21 & up, but there is no cost. It is one of our fun-fundraisers, so we’ll be accepting donations for this year’s fest and selling screenprinted patches and canvas bags, and of course, zines!

We’ve also received a lot of inquiries about whether or not we’re having the Pre-Zine Fest Potluck and Reading this year, and it’s on! Friday, October 7th, the night before the Richmond Zine Fest, we will feast and read some zines at the Wingnut (2005 Barton Avenue, Richmond, VA). Please contact richmondzinefest[at]yahoo[dot]com, if you’re interested in participating in the reading. It’s a very casual event and free, but please bring a dish or non-alcoholic drink to share. The Wingnut is an all-ages, sober space. Check the Facebook event page for more details!

Last but not least: the listing of tablers for 2011 has been updated. We had a bit of a delay with this week’s update due to Irene. If you’re interested in tabling or hosting a workshop, please register soon! We have a few amazing workshops registered so far, but if anyone is interested and/or able to lead a zine-related workshop, specifically, please do so!

Jonny Z Fest Pictures and Yummy News for the Richmond Zine Fest

As promised we have pictures from Saturday’s Jonny Z Fest!

The wind and and rain didn’t prevent our having a good time (although we could’ve won a prize at inventiveness and fastest zine and flyer round up whenever the weather threatened our paper-based goods… see the proof in the pictures: Eros collected rocks for paperweights). The community and music kept our spirits up, and we made the most of the day with a lot of laughter and dancing. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of singer Alison Self, but the other music acts pictured are Josh Small, Photosynthesizers, and No BS! Brass Band. All of the acts had amazing sets that we couldn’t help but jam to at the zine fest table. Also pictured: RZF co-organizer Eros, Click Clack Distro, The Flying Brick Library volunteers, and an amazing dancer/performer who accompanied the Photosynthesizers’ performance. The Jonny Z Fest is an event that the organizers of Richmond Zine Fest look forward to every year. Thanks to everyone who contributed to an amazing local event!

And if that sampling of live music in Richmond wasn’t enough, don’t forget to come out to our benefit show August 31st at Strange Matter! On the last night of the summery months, Long Arms, Black Girls, and Lobo Marino of the local music scene will unite with local zine writers to raise money for our venue space. We love these bands and everyone involved, and we’re incredibly excited and happy that they’ve decided to give us a hand with this show. Who says you can’t party
on a Wednesday? We have the winter and many a school night to stay in. 😉

And now: News for Your Belly 

We can now announce that Lamplighter will be at the Richmond Zine Fest on Oct. 8th again!  We hope that those of you of who enjoyed their coffee, sandwiches, whoopie pies, and other fare last year are pleased. And for those of you who didn’t have the opportunity to do so at the previous zine fest, just you wait. Or don’t wait… Lamplighter is open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 116 S. Addison Street, Richmond, VA, 23220.

The Richmond Zine Fest will be held Oct. 8th at the GCCR.  Registration for tabling and workshops are still open. Register and pay to confirm your space as soon as possible. Be on the look out for more zine fest events and blog posts with tips for tablers and workshoppers soon.

BenefitposterfinalJoin the organizers for the annual Richmond Zine Fest for a benefit show with great music and zine performances.Long Arms, Black Girls, Lobo Marino, and local zine writers will take to the stage at Strange Matter to raise funds for Richmond Zine Fest, which has been going strong since 2007.  Cost is $5 at the door, and additional donations will be happily accepted as well.  Familiar faces and the simply curious are invited to attend.  This show is for ages 18 and up.

 

Event Time: Wednesday, August 31st. Doors open at 8 p.m.; Music starts at 9 p.m. (Kitchen closes at 10 p.m.)

We’re lucky to have three (that I know of) local places that appreciate and collect zines–The Flying Brick, VCU Libraries’ Special Collection & Archives department at James Branch Cabell Library, and now The Wingnut Radical Lending Library.

Need a reason shop? Planning to treat yourself regardless? Reduce your shopping guilt by helping Richmond Zine Fest raise funds as you purchase items at Rumors. From 4pm until 7pm on June 22nd, we will receive a percentage of the cost of items sold.  Richmond Zine Fest will also have items available for purchase, such as zines and patches and more! We hope to see you there!

Full disclosure: All proceeds for Richmond Zine Fest go toward the cost of renting the space for the annual event held on October 8th at the GCCR as well as publicity costs and other fees (printing posters, copying flyers, etc.).  Any and all remaining funds go toward the planning of the next Richmond Zine Fest and other Zine Fest related events. None of the funds line the pockets of the organizers.  We plan this event because we love zines and the people who make them and read them. ❤

Thanks to everyone who came out to support Richmond Zine Fest on Thursday. A special thanks goes to Sprout for hosting the event, our emcee Danny, and everyone who bravely jumped on stage: Dixon, Alan Webb, Mo, Elizabeth Albrecht, Safiya, Liz Canfield, Eric Scott, and Cat.
