11:00am – 11:50pm: Making the Most Out of Kickstarter (18+)
Adam Casey, long time comic book merchant has used Kickstarter successfully more than once for his art. This workshop will give a first person account of success with Kickstarter and provide tips for making the most out of a crowdfunding campaign for any creative endeavor.
12:00pm – 12:50pm: Self-Portrait Empowerment (All Ages)
Join us as we create images of ourselves and explore our creativity and agency together. Art supplies will be provided. This workshop will include casual discussion around our experiences of identity and self-definition. Sharing is encouraged, but completely optional. Lead by Brianna Gribben.
1:00pm – 1:50pm: Black Zines/Lives Matter (13+)
Join us we recognize black voices/zines, celebrate the art/writing that has come out of the BLM movement and create something of our own. This workshop will be black, black trans, and black queer centered. Anyone who doesn’t identify as such are welcome to appreciate, learn, and listen, but they are expected to be mindful of how much space they take up. Presented and planned by Celina Williams and Charlie Maria.
2:00pm – 2:50pm: DIY Community Archiving & the SW Virginia Punk History Project (All Ages) [Rescheduled as a Q&A table on Saturday]
The CHS Zine Club is participating in a massive, ongoing DIY local history project focused on the SW VA Punk community. This year they have collected around 60 zines and thousands of DIY flyers, albums, song-sheets, interviews, etc. from a couple dozen contributors, and are now making copies of the materials to distro and donate to regional archives and libraries. Come learn about the project, how to curate a presentation like this for yourself and strategies for cataloguing & cross referencing items, and how to SAFELY disassemble, copy and re-assemble a 35-year-old zine…
3:00pm – 4-15pm: Collages with Meaning (Kid Friendly! All Ages)
Marion Cline is a Junior in high school and will be guiding you in taking things seen as less valuable in magazines or newspapers, and reconstructing them into something beautiful that can inspire. Learn from collage artists such as Romare Bearden, Ellen Gallagher, Hannah Hoch, and more!
4:30pm-5:30pm: Comic Pacing and Character Design (All Ages)
Bizhan Khodabandeh brings you an introduction to understanding comic pacing and character design. This workshop will be part lecture and part execution. Bring writing utensils and a sketchbook or paper.

GenderFail is a publishing and creative project focusing on the perspectives of Queer, Trans, and People of Color. Started in the summer of 2015, GenderFail is a small press run by Brett Erich Suemnicht. Suemnicht who is currently an MFA student at VCU, invites artists to create an original zine that challenges heteronormativity, gender, or racism. Publications exhibited in the fair would include various zines; Abortion Services, FxNx, Things Found & Dealt With and Hawking Sexist Chemicals. Pattern Language for a Social Fabric
We are connected to people we don’t know, music we’ve never heard, ancestors we’ve never known, lovers we’ve never kissed. A social fabric, tightly bound and seldom acknowledged, a pattern language. Red Tent is a submission based zine–we accept art, illustrations, cartoons, poetry, fiction, interpretive dance, cultural criticism, political manifestos etc. There is only one requirement: all content must be created during the time that the artist is menstruating (but need not be about menstruating, unless they really want). By providing a space to showcase what we are capable of creating during our periods, we hope to make this a vehicle for celebrating our powers and countering the idea that menstruation is a source of weakness or something we have to hide.

Something Something Press is a distro and publisher located in Richmond, VA that distributes materials that focus on radical mental health and community empowerment. RVA Peer Support is a grassroots project started in 2010 that holds non-judgmental spaces for frank discussions about mental health, daily struggles and accomplishments, and spreading the idea of intentional peer support outside of meetings. RVA Peer Support holds spaces without the assistance or input from mental health professionals: We are not mental health professionals.
